Meet Your Teacher
Sophia Blake (aka Sing-A-Long Sophie) trained in classical piano for twelve years, beginning when she was six years old! She credits this early instruction with making music and piano feel like her native language. Sophia began teaching piano students of her own at just fourteen years old. She later went on to study Musical Theatre at Northwestern University and has trained in a variety of vocal styles. She currently teaches piano and voice students of all ages across New York City. In addition to her performance and teaching experience, Sophia has worked with young children for years as a nanny, babysitter, and singalong teacher. As a result, she is fluent in toddler-ese and uniquely equipped to teach the essentials of music to the youngest of children!

More than you think! Learning to natively and fluently understand music is like learning a language, the younger you start the more it becomes second nature. Very young children and toddlers have the capacity to learn to read and “speak” music alongside learning to read their native language. These early lessons give them the foundational musical skills to excell in formal instrument and musical training when they are ready.

That’s the beauty of private lessons! Lessons will be tailored to you and your child’s interests. I offer the combination of piano, guitar, and voice so that very young children can try their hand at a little bit of everything, but if you already know you would like to spend more time on one piece of it let me know and I’m happy to focus on those skills.

Generally I will start the lesson with a brief 1-2 song sing-a-long with shakers to get your child excited, singing, and feeling the rhythm. The rest of the lesson structure will depend on your child’s age, interests, and meeting them where they’re at that day, but can include a range of rhythm and music games, learning to identify keys on the keyboard, collaborative work on music theory worksheets, learning basic scales, chords, and songs, practice strumming, playing guitar and singing together, and more!
